Mar. 26 – The Antwerp Port Authority opened its second branch office in Pune as part of its plans to further develop business outside Europe and generate cargo for Antwerp.

The first Antwerp Port Authority branch office opened in Mumbai in 2006. The Port of Antwerp is Europe’s second-largest port and its Antwerp Port Authority is tasked with the job of expanding the port’s reach globally to emerging markets.

“We see a great demand for effective support from a large number of countries. This can be an important leverage point for us to expand Antwerp’s presence abroad. The promotion, training and consultancy activities carried out until now by APEC and Antwerp Port Consultancy play a significant role in making Antwerp known worldwide as an important center of maritime know-how,” said Yannick Dufraimont, director of Port of Antwerp International in an earlier statement made this month.

Antwerp is a major avenue for Indian exports and imports in the European region with four million tons of freight transported from India via Antwerp and vice-versa. A majority of the business between India and Antwerp is comprised of containers, steel, and petroleum derivatives.

Pune is India’s eighth largest city and the second largest in the state of Maharashtra. The city is famous for the quality of its educational facilities and its solid manufacturing, glass, sugar and forging industries.
