Popular American Children’s Magazines Launched In Indian Market

Apr. 19 – Indian versions of the popular American children’s magazines ‘Highlights’ and ‘High Five’ were launched in India this week. American Ambassador to India, Nancy J Powell, noted during the launch that “Highlights Magazine has been delivering fun with a purpose for three generations of American children since 1946. From its beginning, the magazine has celebrated children’s experiences in many different cultures and religions around the world.”

Powell hopes that the launch of the two magazines will strengthen cultural contact between India and America.

“It is our people-to-people ties that are the most important bond between our two countries, and it is our children who are our shared future,” she said. “Before becoming a diplomat, I was a teacher. I know how important it is for children to develop life-long reading habits at an early age.”

“Stories and reading are a wonderful form of communication between people and lands,” stated Andrew Shafran, Vice President of Highlights Magazine. “Stories widen horizons and emphasize not only what is different and special about individual families and cultures, but also what we share in common.”

Chris Devonshire-Ellis, Principal of Dezan Shira & Associates, further commented that “India’s market, especially for educational products, is far more open than that of China’s, where the publishing industry is severely handicapped towards foreign investors. The launch of these magazines in India as opposed to China demonstrates India’s potent and open market to international companies extremely well. India is opening up in many sectors and foreign investors should take note.”
